Hi, I’m Shamyl.
I’m a huge fan of the sea and wanted to explore my passion for it by joining MWSRP.
During the month of November, I came out as a volunteer with MWSRP learn more about the ocean. I had recently finished working on a tuna fishing boat where I learned a lot about fishing, the ocean, and the marine life. This experience sparked a new passion in me and I had to learn more.
As a volunteer, the experience of being out on the South Ari Marine Protected Area (S.A. MPA) was so invigorating. I loved swimming with the whale sharks, learning how to photo-ID them, and gaining new data collection skills. The science of whale shark research is keeping my brain sharp and I love learning new things.
When the opportunity to work for MWSRP came up, I took it. Now as a member of staff, I hope to help the programme continue deepening its connection into the local communities. I have realized that there needs to be a lot of work done for conservation of marine life and ecosystems in Maldives and I am hoping to do my part to enhance that.
