  • Nov 25 Video of whale sharks in Ahe, Papua

Check out this short video shot by the Scubasigns team in and around Ahe Island Papua, Indonesia. This was the island and extraordinary whale shark aggregation site that Morgan and Jen of the MWSRP visited earlier this year.

  • Nov 24 The MWSRP and The American School of Doha Complete Successful Field Study in South Ari!

We are very pleased to say that November’s week long trip to the Maldives was a resounding triumph, with a great time had by all who went! The idea was to allow the students from the ASD to experience and learn about the whale shark and its coral reef habitat, and with a bit of luck, swim with a whale shark (or two!).

  • Mar 14 South Ari Atoll: the sharks are back, but so are the tourist boats

Most of the sharks encountered by the Maldives Whale Shark Research Programme team are known individuals, however, a few have been new sharks.

One individual is a new female, only the fifth female in the MWSRP database. She measured 4.3 metres and hung around for a very long and interactive swim with six members of the research team.

  • Mar 05 The BBC continues its interest in the MWSRP

The MWSRP has been busy studying the whale sharks in the Maldives since 2006, and helping to provide additional education has always been high on the organisation's priority list.

In 2009, the first stages of a foriegn student exchange programme were initiated with a Maldivian and a UK school as part of the new Marine Protected Area community focussed projects. The UK students are set to visit the Maldives in April 2010. With that in mind the BBC headed out to the Maldives to film the project.

  • Feb 16 A Butchery in Batangas

An 18-foot long whale shark (Rhincodon typus), de-finned and fighting for life, was found floating belly-up amidst the rough waters of Bahay Kambing, a sheltered cove in the municipality of Tingloy. Its twin pairs of dorsal and pectoral fins were neatly and deliberately sliced off - the soft, white flesh glistening in the morning rays. Rope and knife-marks were evident all over its tail - mercifully too think to cut through.

  • Jan 20 Ocean Dancer, the MWSRP's newest sponsor

David Mensard, owner of the luxurious 110' Ocean Dancer, has lived in the Maldives since 1990. He has witnessed dramatic changes to the marine environment. Changes that made him realise he needed to do something to help the oceans flourish again. http://www.oceandancer-maldives.com.
