Beginning in January 2011, Rory Moore, a leading marine biologist and a professional underwater photographer who produces cutting edge images, will lead an 18 month expedition across the Pacific Ocean, aboard the marine research vessel La Cueca.

Check out this short video shot by the Scubasigns team in and around Ahe Island Papua, Indonesia. This was the island and extraordinary whale shark aggregation site that Morgan and Jen of the MWSRP visited earlier this year.

The MWSRP has been busy studying the whale sharks in the Maldives since 2006, and helping to provide additional education has always been high on the organisation's priority list.

In 2009, the first stages of a foriegn student exchange programme were initiated with a Maldivian and a UK school as part of the new Marine Protected Area community focussed projects. The UK students are set to visit the Maldives in April 2010. With that in mind the BBC headed out to the Maldives to film the project.

The Maldives Whale Shark Research Programme (MWSRP) (http://www.mwsrp.org/), as its name suggests, study whale sharks in the Republic of Maldives. However, that aspect of their work is merely the tip of the iceberg.

Brussels 15.12.09: The Shark Alliance applauds the EU Council of Fisheries Ministers’ decision to end all fishing for porbeagle sharks and reduce by 90% fishing quotas for spurdog, in line with scientific advice and proposals from  the European Commission.

House Clover, a guest house in Male, has joined the cause and become the Maldives Whale Shark Research Programme's logistical sponsor in the capital Male.

Cameras Underwater continue to support the MWSRP and its work by sponsoring some of the organisation's camera equipment, essential to developing the whale shark database further.

On 17 November Tethys' founder and honorary president, Giuseppe Notarbartolo di Sciara, received a knighthood in the Order of Saint-Charles by H.S.H. the Prince Albert II of Monaco, for services rendered to the Principality in his quality of Chair of the Scientific Committee of ACCOBAMS.

FenMaaDhiguRan (English translation - Water Flower Long Sun) - Announced on June 5^th 2009 by the Maldivian Government is the largest Marine Protected Area (MPA) in the Maldives. It finds its home at the southern tip of the South Ari Atoll, Republic of Maldives, home to some of the most superb dive sites in the World and a globally significant whale shark aggregation. The area is forty two square kilometres of coral reef and turquoise waters bordered by idyllic palm fringed, white sand islands.
