March 2010

  • Mar 14 South Ari Atoll: the sharks are back, but so are the tourist boats

Most of the sharks encountered by the Maldives Whale Shark Research Programme team are known individuals, however, a few have been new sharks.

One individual is a new female, only the fifth female in the MWSRP database. She measured 4.3 metres and hung around for a very long and interactive swim with six members of the research team.

  • Mar 05 The BBC continues its interest in the MWSRP

The MWSRP has been busy studying the whale sharks in the Maldives since 2006, and helping to provide additional education has always been high on the organisation's priority list.

In 2009, the first stages of a foriegn student exchange programme were initiated with a Maldivian and a UK school as part of the new Marine Protected Area community focussed projects. The UK students are set to visit the Maldives in April 2010. With that in mind the BBC headed out to the Maldives to film the project.
